Frequently Asked Questions
What is HopScotch about?

We’ve been to heaps of whisky bars in our time, but we found many had a certain vibe to them, which was all about dress codes, jazz, wingback chairs, and generally catered towards the wealthy - while this type of bar has its place, we thought it would be cool to have a whisky bar that was priced with the general population in mind, with most drams in the £6-£8 range rather than the £15+ range, laid back, no dress codes, plenty of cocktails and good beer for the non-whisky drinkers who are also welcome. Essentially we wanted a place for amazing whisky that had the friendliness and familiarity of a pub. We’re not going for the biggest selection, nor the fanciest aesthetic - but we are always striving to be considered the best whisky bar in Liverpool, and hopefully one of the best whisky bars in the UK.

Why the Fabric District?

This is a question we often get asked, and there are a couple of reasons why we chose the Fabric District despite it being a bit off the beaten track. Our location means that HopScotch is a destination bar, which has the downside of having virtually no passing trade, but what it does ensure is that people are generally coming because they appreciate what we do and what we have to offer - this also has the added benefit of nobody stumbling in off the street drunk, and as a result we’ve never had any trouble. The second reason is that we (the owners) are from working class backgrounds, and city centre venues were cost prohibitive.

What sets you apart from other whisky bars?

We’ve always had an interest in independently bottled whisky, and we curate the selection to lean more heavily towards this niche product. Independent bottlers are small companies that purchase whisky casks either directly from a distillery or through an intermediate such as a broker, they then bottle these whiskies generally as single casks, at cask strength, with no colouring added, and no chill-filtration. Since no two casks are identical these whiskies are unique, rare, and fleeting, and we really find a beauty in that. You can come into HopScotch and try whiskies that may only be one of 100 bottles produced, and this also means that our selection changes almost every week. Single cask, cask strength whisky is in our opinion the purest form of whisky.

Do you do whisky tastings for stag groups?

We will do whisky tastings for any group who wishes to do a tasting, and this includes stags. What we do insist on for stag tastings or tastings for any large group is that it takes place before the bar starts to open up to the public - for more information contact us at contact@hopscotchliverpool.com
